Stan Wawrinka and Albert Ramos-Vinolas, both unseeded, will square off in the first round of the French Open on Monday. Wawrinka is on his 19th appearance at Roland Garros, one place down to number 89 in the live ranking. At his peak, the Swiss won the title here back in 2015. He is however in the twilight stage of his career and has lost twice in this round in his last three appearances. The former world number three is having a rocky season so far with 14 wins and 11 losses. Five of his wins have come on clay and he will hope to extend this against a player he has dominated in past encounters. Wawrinka has won all previous seven meetings with Ramos-Vinolas with four of those victories coming on clay. This will be their first encounter since 2016 and their second at the French Open.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas’ hopes of a first win against Wawrinka could be prolonged as he comes to this match in woeful form. The veteran Spaniard has played 26 matches so far and has lost 18 of those. His eight wins however have all come on clay where he is most suited. His struggles have seen him drop from being ranked in the top 40 at the start of the season to 67th currently. This will be his 14th appearance at the French Open where his best-ever finish came in 2016 when he made the quarterfinals. Ramos-Vinolas has however been eliminated in the first round here six total times. A second-round battle with wildcard Thanasi Kokkinnakis awaits the winner of this latest match between the two.
Wawrinka has never lost against Ramos-Vinolas and with the latter struggling for form, we feel confident that his unbeaten record will remain. Our prediction for Stan Wawrinka v Albert Ramos-Vinolas is for Wawrinka to win.
