Reigning Primeira Liga champions Sporting Lisbon will kick off their 2021/22 campaign against the newly-promoted Vizela who are playing in the top-flight for just the second time in their history. Sporting achieved their first league title since 2002 and kicked off the new season with a 2-1 Super Cup final win over Braga last weekend. These sides haven’t met since 2014 but Sporting took the meeting 3-2 and they should have no problem attaining three points here.
Last season’s title winners finished with 85 points and just one defeat to their name whilst at home they were unbeaten through their 17 matches. Sporting won 13 of their games when hosting and conceded just 0.58 goals on average per game at home. They took more points (43) at home than any other side in the division and nine of their 13 wins were accompanied by a clean sheet. The hosts have won each of their last four games in pre-season including that Super Cup win and they have only lost one game since January.
Vizela finished runners-up to Estoril in Liga Portugal 2 last season and as a result, achieved promotion to the top-tier for the first time since 1984. Like Sporting, their home form was unmatched however, on their travels they experienced some wobbles and that’s where the trouble starts. Vizela won just seven of their 17 games on the road and defeat to Estrela on the 24th of July was their third straight defeat away from home this summer. Defeat to Estrela was Vizela’s first competitive match of the season after six pre-season friendlies in which they lost five.
