South Africa (first, ten points) will look to continue their Rugby World Cup knockout charge when they face the winless Canada side (fifth, zero points) in a Pool ‘B’ encounter.
The Springboks had started their tournament with a reverse – a 23-13 loss to New Zealand meant South Africa had a lot to cover for the rest of the Pool encounters. They quickly regrouped to pick up a routine 57-3 win over Namibia and in the process gained a bonus point. The Springboks continued their surge with another bonus point win over Italy – another routine 49-3 win. Cheslin Kolbe added two tries for South Africa, who also had a try each from Lukhanyo Am, Makazole Mapimpi, Snyman and Malcolm Marx. After this win, the Springboks went top of the table, but know that New Zealand with a game in hand will be sure of racing past them.
Canada started the tournament, as expected with consecutive losses. They were thrashed by Italy 48-7 in their tournament opener and then fell to a 63-0 loss to New Zealand in their next match. There are literally no hopes for the Canadians from the tournament and have now gone seven straight Test losses. Their record in the Rugby World Cups is no different, with Canada without a win in the tournament since September 2011. The Canadians have lost eight and drawn one Test after that. With not much going in their favour this tournament either, it is tough to see them upsetting the Springboks.
The two-time winners South Africa are in such a position that a win in this match against Canada will be enough to guarantee them a quarter-final berth. The only way this can go wrong is if Italy upset New Zealand in their own final pool match. With the Springboks having never lost to Canada in their two H2Hs – including one in the World Cup – a win for the African side looks a foregone conclusion.
