Newly formed expansion team St. Louis City SC will look to continue its dream start in its first season in the MLS when it hosts the San Jose Earthquakes at CITYPARK. Nobody would have anticipated such an excellent run of form to kick off their first season in Major League Soccer but St. Louis City currently sits top of the Western Conference after winning all three opening matches. City is coming off a hugely impressive 2-1 away win against a tough Timbers side, battling back from a goal down in the first three minutes of play to take home the three points on the day. The newest MLS franchise has already passed a number of tests, including the first matchday where they defeated last season’s powerhouse Austin FC in their own building. St. Louis City now returns to its home ground where they previously recorded a convincing 3-1 win over Charlotte FC two weeks ago.
The visiting San Jose comes into this fixture looking to continue its encouraging form to start the new season. The Quakes are coming off a 1-0 home victory over the Colorado Rapids in their last outing, the team’s second consecutive home victory after a 2-1 win over the Whitecaps the previous week. San Jose lost its only other away match this season, falling 2-1 to Atlanta United to open the season. Their record of two wins and one loss puts the Earthquakes fifth in the standings with a points total of six and a goal differential of +1. It’s an encouraging start for a team that finished rock bottom of the Western Conference last season and fans will surely be hoping for a playoff push this year. However, the visitors will have to improvise upon their dreadful away form which saw San Jose record just one win in 17 away trips last season.
St. Louis City has started the season wonderfully and are certainly exceeding expectations so far. The team has played in a number of thrilling, high-scoring encounters already and all signs point towards a similar type of match being on the cards for this one. With St. Louis City and San Jose both finding the net with consistency and the hosts in particular struggling to keep their opponents off the scoresheet, expect another fun clash.
