Tenth seed Frances Tiafoe has again advanced to the US Open fourth round and will on Sunday battle wildcard Rinky Hijikata. The winner will set up a quarterfinal showdown with either 14th-seed Tommy Paul or unseeded Ben Shelton. Rinky Hijikata has advanced to the second week of competition at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. To achieve this feat, he defeated Zhang Zhizhen in four sets in the last round. Hijikata is making his second appearance at Flushing Meadows. In his debut last season, he was eliminated in the first round. The Australian is having a decent 2023 campaign and has compiled a 32-26 record. Twenty-three of his victories have come on hard court where his only title of the season in the challenger circuit has been won. He is up a massive 29 places to a new career-high live ranking of number 81.
Frances Tiafoe has for a fourth successive season made it to the fourth round at the US Open. Last year he managed to go beyond the round and record his best-ever finish by making the semifinals. He will hope to eclipse this feat and reach his first-ever Grand Slam final. His form on hard court will have him confident of doing just that. Tiafoe has won 20 of the 27 matches he has played on the surface. His latest win saw him battle from a set down to outwit 22nd seed Adrian Mannarino in four sets. It was the first match in which he had dropped a set in the competition. Tiafoe has compiled a 36-14 record in 2023 and has won two titles though none has been on hard court. Despite his run to this round, he has dropped out of the ATP top 10 and is ranked 13th in the live ranking.
Our prediction for Rinky Hijikata v Frances Tiafoe is for the match to see over 33.5 games played. Tiafoe and Hijikata have been in good form on hard court. They however haven’t breezed past their opponents at the US Open. Combining the two should see a large number of games played here as this will not be a straightforward win for the victor.
