On Tuesday night, two lower league sides lock horns when Queens Park Rangers host Sunderland for an EFL Cup tie at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium. The home club are presently challenging for a place in the Championship playoff spots. Their guests are also among teams challenging for a playoff spot, but in League One, a tier below. Both sides are coming off defeats at the weekend. QPR lost 2-1 away to Peterborough, their third defeat in six matches. All three of those losses were on the road. They are a much stronger team on home soil. QPR have won four and drawn one of their previous six home matches in all competitions. One of those games was a 2-2 draw with Premier League side Everton in the last round of this competition. QPR emerged victorious on penalties. They have three clean sheets in their previous six home matches. The Championship side have a good record against Sunderland, winning three of their last four home matches against The Black Cats. The two teams were facing off in the Premier League as recently as 2015.
Sunderland lost their last match at home to relegation-threatened Charlton. Despite that they are fourth in League One, two points behind the leaders and with a couple of games in hand, so could easily be playing Sunderland in the Championship next season. Sunderland have so far beaten Port Vale, Championship side Blackpool and Wigan in this season's EFL Cup and all three wins came on the road. They have won four of their last five away matches in all competitions, including a victory in the previous round of this competition. The only blot on that run was a 4-0 defeat away to Portsmouth. Sunderland are a strong side, but we believe that they will fall short against a QPR side in great home form. Back a home win.
