Germany and Portugal face off in the second round of matches in Group F with mixed fortunes from their opening clashes. Portugal opened their title defence with a 3-0 win over Hungary while Germany were 1-0 losers to France. Both sides had to fight hard in their opening fixtures and the result against Hungary will flatter Portugal. They had to wait till the 84th minute to get their first goal and they will hope for a more comfortable outing against the former world champions. We can’t say there’s a guarantee for that, with Germany yet to register a point in this group. Also, Portugal had their defence stretched by Hungary on a number of occasions and having the aging Pepe at the heart of it while Joao Cancelo is out after a positive Covid test will not offer much favor against Germany. Defence is the weakest link for Portugal, even though they have three straight clean sheets ahead of this game.
Germany do not have a very strong run ahead of this game and while they face one of the most accomplished forwards in the world, they will be worried about a defence line that has no clean sheet in the four matches. Mats Hummels scored the own goal that saw them lose to France in the last game but generally he had a great game and he will hope to inspire the backline against Cristiano Ronaldo and co. It is not a secret too that Germany struggled to create chances against France and questions will be asked of the forwards available for Joachim Low. However, in the last 10 matches, they’ve failed to score in just two matches – against France and Spain, but one win in the last four matches doesn’t sound good enough for a team of Germany’s stature.
Germany’s struggles at the 2018 World Cup must be ringing loud after their opening defeat. They’ll go here seeking redemption but must also employ caution against this Portugal side, with Cristiano Ronaldo starting the competition well. For all their qualities, both sides seem to be struggling defensively and here we will back them both to score, in what is expected to be a tight game.
