The 2021 Copa Libertadores final, just like the 2021 one will be an all-Brazilian affair as Palmeiras and Flamengo head out to Uruguay for the big game. Palmeiras will be out to defend the title they won last year after beating Santos, but their run to this game hasn’t been very impressive. They are coming from a four-game winless run, and have failed to score in two of the last three. Palmeiras twice lost the lead to draw 2-2 with Atletico Mineiro in their domestic league, right ahead of this game. That draw at least put a halt to the three-game losing run and they will be hoping for a better outing here. The run up to the final wasn’t smooth either, and in the semis, Palmeiras only advanced on the away goal rule after home and away draws with Atletico Mineiro. Flamengo aren’t the best opponents Palmeiras would have hoped for; they have no win in their last nine meetings with Flamengo.
Just like Palmeiras, Flamengo are looking to win their third Copa Libertadores title. Their second came right before Palmeiras’ latest, in 2019. As they look to go back to the helm of South American football, Flamengo carry the favorites’ tag, heading to the final unbeaten in nine matches. In the nine matches, they’ve scored two or more in seven and they’ve won six. The most interesting bit is that they are unbeaten in the last 12 Copa Libertadores matches, and going into this, they have six straight wins. They faced Barcelona from Ecuador in the semis, and won 2-0 in each leg. In five straight Copa Libertadores matches, they’ve now scored two or more goals. Their run against Palmeiras will give them the confidence they need for this game; in the last nine meetings, they have no loss, and won five.
Flamengo take to this game a very strong run in their recent matches, as well as in the Copa Libertadores. They have been dominant in matches against Palmeiras and from their performances this season in this competition, they will be favorites here. Go for a Flamengo win.
