The last time Nigeria met Egypt was in a 2019 friendly match and Nigeria won 1-0, their only victory over Egypt in the last five meetings. The two giants of African football will renew their rivalry at the 2021 AFCON when they face off in Group D on Tuesday. Going to this game, Nigeria are unbeaten in their last three matches; two wins and a draw, and they’ve failed to score in just one of the last five matches. Only one of their last five matches has produced over 2.5 goals but the team has scored two goals in three of those five matches. They have two clean sheets in the five matches. They are among the best performers at AFCON, and in the last edition they got to the semi finals, eventually finishing third. Three of Nigeria’s last five games at the AFCON finals have produced over 2.5 goals and they’ve conceded two or more in three of the five. Nigeria have managed one clean sheet in their last five AFCON matches.
Egypt are the record champions of Africa, with seven titles. After performing dismally at home in the last edition, they will be out to restore lost glory in Cameroon. A game against Nigeria, tough as it may sound, will not scare Egypt, having beaten Nigeria in three of their last five meetings. The North Africans have one of the best squads going into this competition and after going on a good run at the Arab Cup in December, will feel stronger with more top players joining in for AFCON. Egypt have however failed to score in their last two matches, losing 1-0 to Tunisia then drawing 0-0 with Qatar in their final two matches at the Arab Cup. Half of their last five matches have produced over 2.5 goals and they’ve failed to score in just the two matches, out of 17.
Two sides that have dominated African football for quite a while face off here, and are coming from quite impressive runs. One thing that’s not in dispute, is the quality in these teams, especially in attack. With the freshness that comes with the first game, we expect an end to end attacking game here, so over 2.5 goals can be a safe bet here.
