World number seven, Casper Ruud, will take on 29th-ranked Nicolas Jarry in the round of 16 at Roland Garros on Monday. The winner of this encounter will face Holger Rune or Francisco Cerundolo in the quarter-final. The head-to-head record between these two is 1-1. Ruud won on the hard surface in Seoul last year, while Jarry came out on top on the clay in Geneva last month. That loss to Jarry last month was Ruud’s last match before this tournament, which is something that he will have at the back of his mind. The Norwegian kept his hopes of reaching back-to-back Roland Garros finals alive by overcoming Zhang Zhizhen in the last round after dropping the first set. He got noticeably better as the match went on, converting six of 11 breakpoints and wrapping up the match in the fourth set. With wins over Elias Ymer and Giulio Zeppieri under his belt in this competition, Ruud is now 14-5 on the clay. While he hasn’t been at his very best this year, he has already claimed a title and will be aiming for his third major quarter-final in this one.
However, standing in Ruud’s way is the now top-30-ranked Nicolas Jarry, who is enjoying some of the best form of his career. The Chilean extended his current winning streak to seven matches after overcoming Marcos Giron in the last round. Jarry came into this tournament following a title-winning run in Geneva, where he beat Ruud in the second round in three sets. His clay form this year has been particularly impressive, currently 20-7, which has helped him improve from 87th in the world ranking in February to inside the top 30 at present. Jarry began his 2023 Roland Garros campaign with a straight-sets win over Hugo Dellien before taking down 16th seed Tommy Paul as the underdog in round two. Another win here could propel the Chilean into the top 25 in the world, but can he overcome the Norwegian for the second time in as many weeks?
While Jarry may have a slight psychological edge, having beaten this opponent less than two weeks ago, Ruud has the advantage of experience in these situations on his side. He should go on to win the match, but we fancy Jarry will push him all the way and should win at least a set. Therefore, our Nicolas Jarry v Casper Ruud prediction: Nicolas Jarry to win a set.
