Two unseeded players meet in the third round of the US Open. Wild card Michael Mmoh takes on Jack Draper and the winner will face either eighth seeded Andrey Rublev or unseeded Arthur Rinderknech in the last 16. Both Draper and Mmoh are bidding to reach the US Open fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in their careers. Draper is in the third round of the US Open for the second successive year. In 2022, he took on Karen Khachanov at this stage and was one set all and 5-6 down in the third when having to retire. The Briiish player has had several injury problems in his career but looks fit and well at present. He was as high as 38th in the rankings in January but his inactivity due to another injury had seen him drop to 123rd at the start of this tournament. The British player is up to 119th in the live rankings after his second round straight sets win over 17th seeded Hubert Hurkacz.
Michael Mmoh had only won one main draw in the US Open before this year. He's had double that amount of wins this year and is now up to a career high 78th in the world rankings. His form coming into this Grand Slam has been good with a last 16 in both Washington and the Winston Salem Open. There have been some poor results too though with a loss to the world number 492 Tristan Boyer and three more defeates inflicted on him by players not in the top 100. He has played well in New York this week with a straight sets win over 11th seed Karen Khachanov. It was tougher in round two as he went to five sets to get past John Isner (playing his final Grand Slam) and the match saw 55 games played. Draper is the player to back here to reach the last 16.
