Alex de Minaur and unseeded Matteo Berrettini will square off in the second round at Wimbledon on Friday. Advancing from this tie will set up a third-round clash with either 19th seed Alexander Zverev or lucky loser Yosuke Watanuki. Berrettini was a finalist here two seasons ago. He was at the top of his game then but he has since taken a step back due to struggles with injury. The Italian missed last season’s edition due to testing positive for Covid-19. This season he has played 18 matches and has won 10 times, the latest victory was a 3-1 success over Lorenzo Sonego. That first-round win was his first of the season on grass, a surface he has excelled since his debut on it in 2018. He defeated de Minaur on grass in London in 2021 in his only win in this fixture. Berrettini is up one place to 37th in the live ranking.
Alex de Minaur also had to come from a set down to win his opening-round match against the qualifier Kimmer Coppejans. He will now seek another win here to add to his 22 already this season. The Australian has won six of the eight matches he has played on grass this year. This form saw him make the final at the Queen’s Club where he fell to world number one Carlos Alcaraz. de Minaur has won twice against Berrettini in the three times they have been paired up against each other. Both matches however have been on hard court. With his current form on grass, he will be confident of extending his advantage in this matchup. The 24-year-old is currently ranked 17th in the ATP.
Our prediction for Matteo Berrettini v Alex de Minaur is for de Minaur to win. de Minaur has defeated Berrettini twice. Berrettini however has won the only match between the two on grass and is also a former finalist here. This should go beyond three sets and this is where we feel de Minaur will edge it as Berrettini has fitness problems.
