Latvia will be seeking their first win when they welcome Turkey in a Group D Euro 2024 qualifier on Friday. This will be Latvia’s second game of the group and they look to rise from bottom against third placed Turkey. The hosts come into this game with back to back losses, the most recent a 1-0 defeat to Wales. Latvia have been unable to keep a clean sheet in six matches. Their only win in the last six games was on post match penalties over Estonia in the Baltic Cup. However, they’ve only failed to score in one of their last six matches. A shock 1-0 win over Austria in 2019 remains the only time they’ve avoided defeat in 12 Euro qualification matches. They have just that win in 22 Euro qualification matches. Poor as they’ve been, Latvia rarely give Turkey an easy time. In seven meetings, the two sides have drawn five.
Turkey finally managed to beat Latvia in the teams’ last meeting. It ended 2-1 in 2021 and Turkey will hope this time they can make light work of Latvia’s challenge. After an opening win over Armenia in this group, Turkey suffered a 2-0 loss against Croatia in their second game. Before that loss they had posted three straight wins; that loss marks the only time they failed to score in five. Three times in the last four matches, Turkey managed to score two goals. Both sides have however scored in four of their last five matches; the four have had over 2.5 goals. Turkey’s form in Euro qualifiers gives them the advantage, having lost just two of their last 22 matches. Away from home they have three wins in four Euro qualification matches.
Turkey have been troubled by Latvia before and they will want to change the narrative here. Heading into the game, Turkey have the better run of form. They face a side that is hardworking but we predict the Latvia v Turkey game will end in a win for Turkey.
