World number eight, Jannik Sinner, and 101st-ranked Alexandre Muller will get their 2023 Roland Garros tournament underway when the pair meet on Monday. The winner of this match will go on to meet either Daniel Altmaier or Marc-Andrea Huesler in the next round. Sinner comes into this tournament following a third-round exit at the Rome Masters earlier this month. He has already earned a tournament victory this year and holds a positive record of 28-7 and 7-2 on the clay. However, the Italian's lead-up to this tournament has been a difficult one. In Barcelona last month, Sinner handed Lorenzo Musetti a quarter-final walkover as he withdrew due to illness. Then, in Rome, Sinner looked out of spells and required three sets to get by lucky loser Alexander Shevchenko before losing in three to Francisco Cerundolo in the round of 16. He' s withdrawn from two of the last three tournaments he's played. Of the top 10 seeded players in this tournament, Sinner's recent record is fairly uninspiring, but his overall ability isn't questionable.
Meanwhile, Alexandre Muller has done his best work on the Challenger circuit this year and has made steady progress in improving his world ranking. The Frenchman was ranked 160th at the start of the year, but following a good showing at the Waco Challenger event, he got inside the top 130 by the start of March. His undisputed best performance of the year, though, came in Marrakech, where he fell just short in the final against Roberto Carballes Baena after winning the opening set. That run saw him break into the top 100 briefly, recording his career best of 94th and earned him direct entry to this tournament. In fairness, his form since then has been underwhelming, failing to get past the second round of his next five tournaments coming in this one. The Frenchman has never made it past the first round in his two previous attempts here at Roland Garros. He'll likely find it difficult to overcome Sinner in this one but will relish the experience in front of his home crowd.
Sinner should win this match, but it's unlikely that it will be straightforward. His fitness has been questionable in recent months, and his performances on the clay have been far from impressive. Muller, meanwhile, is also coming into this tournament with unimpressive form but has shown this season that he can trade blows with even the best players in the world. With little value to be had on an outright win for the Italian, we will be trying our hand with a high and moderate-risk standalone bet behind our main pick. Each of Sinner's last two games has had a tiebreak, so for our high-risk bet, we'll be taking a punt on over 0.5 tiebreaks here at odds of 3.4. For our moderate risk option, we're going with over 28.5 games to be played. A straight-set win for the Italian will be our main wager. OurJannik Sinner v Alexandre Muller prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in straight sets.
