Iceland will on Saturday host Slovakia in round three of the 2024 Euro Championship Qualifiers. Both teams have been pooled together in Group J where Slovakia are second and Iceland fourth. Iceland are one point adrift of Slovakia after winning one of their two matches. After beginning the qualifiers with a 3-0 loss away to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iceland responded by thumping Liechtenstein 7-0. Now playing at home for the first time in these qualifiers, Iceland will be confident of making it back-to-back wins. Head coach Age Hareide, appointed in April, will oversee his first match with this round and will hope all goes to plan. Nicknamed “Our Boys” Iceland will next host group leaders Portugal and will be keen to make use of home turf advantage in both.
Slovakia are the second unbeaten team in the group after Portugal and have picked up four points from their two matches. They defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in their last match after drawing 0-0 with Luxembourg. They are yet to concede in the group and head coach Francesco Calzona will hope their defensive shape remains intact against Iceland. Their defence has played a big part in protecting their unbeaten run which is currently at five matches. They have however managed only one win in this run. The Falcons next play bottom team Liechtenstein knowing back-to-back wins will set them on their way to qualifying for next year’s showpiece.
Our prediction for Iceland v Slovakia is for the match to produce under 2.5 goals. Iceland scored seven goals in their last match but before then had found it hard to overrun teams. Considering this as well as Slovakia’s defensive qualities, we feel confident that this match will be low-scoring.
