Hungary had the worst possible start to their campaign in Euro 2020, losing 3-0 to Portugal and they are supposed to dust themselves very fast in readiness for a game against France. This will be an even tougher game, with France coming from a 1-0 win over Germany. Hungary must have taken lessons on keeping their focus for the entire game, after conceding the three goals against Portugal in the final six minutes. They were impressive in attack on a few occasions and will try more of that against France and after losing just once in 11 matches, one would feel they can offer the world champions some resistance. Being winless in the last four European Championship matches and having conceded 10 goals in the last three doesn’t place them on a good slate ahead of a game against France.

France set themselves well to advance from this group with the win over Germany and the slim score line might not tell the whole story of the game. They dominated the game and had the best openings while limiting Germany to very few open chances. France even had two goals disallowed for very close offside calls. Their superiority however showed and they will hope to finish this early and rest key players in preparation for the knockout rounds. France now have five straight wins, all with clean sheets and are unbeaten in the last eight matches, winning seven and drawing the other.

For Hungary, this is a step up in difficulty, and for France, it should be an easier game than Germany’s. Hungary are historically not the best performers in this competition and they’ve been conceding heavily too in the tournament. The significance of this game for France is that with a win, they’ll get to rest key players for the final group game. We thus expect them to start fast, win it and play the last game without pressure. With the expected fast start, back France to lead at half time like it has been the case in four of their last five matches.
