Sixth seed Holger Rune and 23rd seed Francisco Cerundolo will battle in the fourth round at the French Open on Monday. A quarterfinal showdown with either fourth seed Casper Ruud or the unseeded Nicolas Jarry awaits the winner. Rune has moved into the ATP top five for the first time in his young career thanks to advancing to this round. He defeated the qualifier Genaro Alberto Olivieri in straight sets to move up one place to fifth in the live ranking. The win was his 15th of the season on clay and took his overall win tally to 29 in 39 matches played. The Dane has been one of the best performers on clay this season and has played three finals, winning one. Rune made his Roland Garros debut last season and made it to the quarterfinals.
Francisco Cerundolo is in his third appearance at the French Open and has already set a new personal record at the competition. Before this year’s tournament, the Argentine had never gone past the first round where he was eliminated twice in back-to-back seasons. He has so far played four-set matches twice; he beat ninth seed Taylor Fritz 3-1 in the last round. Advancing to the second week of competing has seen him move into 20th place in the live ranking. Cerundolo has had a topsy-turvy campaign so far but has been a bit better on clay. Of his 23 wins, 16 have come on clay. He made it to his first final of the season in Lyon.
Rune has been one of the standout performers this season on clay. His form has him as favorite here, but he will have to sweat it out against an equally good Cerundolo. Our prediction for the Holger Rune v Fernando Cerundolo game is a win for Rune.
