Before this year’s tournament, the Argentine had never gone past the first round where he was eliminated twice in back-to-back seasons. He has so far played four-set matches twice; he beat ninth seed Taylor Fritz 3-1 in the last round. Advancing to the second week of competing has seen him move into 20th place in the live ranking. Cerundolo has had a topsy-turvy campaign so far but has been a bit better on clay. Of his 23 wins, 16 have come on clay. He made it to his first final of the season in Lyon.
