After their impressive 6-2 win over Iran, England now take on the USA this Friday. They top Group B with three points, two more than Wales and the USA with Iran yet to register a point. Undoubtedly, England will find this a tougher game than the match against Iran. A win will take them into the last 16. There might still be work to be done to win the group though if Wales beat Iran. England have never beaten the USA in a competitive fixture but that should all change on Friday. Overall, England have won four of their last five games against the Americans.
The win over Iran was the best performance by England for a fair while. It was far better than their first five Nations League games this year. Those games saw them fail to score from open play. However, they then drew 3-3 with Germany and then put six past Iran. The most impressive fact from those two games is that the nine goals were scored by eight different players. Only Saka has scored twice and it shows this is a squad that doesn't have to totally rely on Harry Kane. That could be important as the English captain is struggling with an injury to his right ankle.
While England have scored nine goals in their last two games, they have conceded five and a total of nine in the last four. Iran scoring twice against them is a worry for Gareth Southgate. Tougher tests lie ahead if they want to win the 2022 World Cup. The thought of them coming up against the French and Brazilian strike forces is enough to make any English fan sweat profusely.
The USA drew 1-1 with Wales on Monday. They had a dominant first half but were nowhere near as impressive in the second period. That was their third draw in four games, though the one against Saudi Arabia in September looks a bit better now. The USA have gone four games without a win with only lowly Grenada beaten in the last six. Their biggest problem is a lack of wins on the road. Only one away game was won in their World Cup qualifying group and that was against Honduras who finished bottom. The USA have now gone nine away games without a win and just three goals scored. They've only managed to score more than once in a game twice in their last eight matches.
Their away form and lack of goals are major problems for the USA. Can they prosper against a less than solid England defence? That's possible but if Costa Rica and Japan can beat the Americans this year, surely England can. Our prediction is a win for Gareth Southgate's team to secure their place in the last 16.
England will have received a massive confidence boost from the win against Iran. The goal drought that plagued them in the summer is most definitely over. Nine goals have been scored in two games and with eight different players scoring. Even if Kane is injured, England have plenty of players capable of finding the back of the net. The USA will of course be a more difficult team to beat. However, England will gain more confidence from the way Wales played against them in the second half on Monday. The American team are nowhere near as good on the road as they are on home soil. A lack of wins and goals in away fixtures is a problem they have to solve. Back England to win this match.
