10th-place CF Montreal will look to get back to winning ways when they host seventh-placed Minnesota United FC for this East vs West battle in the MLS. Montreal are coming off back-to-back defeats. They fell 3-0 away to Philadelphia in the MLS before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Vancouver in the Canadian Championship final in their most recent outing. The results means it’s now three matches without a win for Hernan Losada’s team. It’s been an up-and-down year for Montreal who looked like they were going to finish towards the bottom of the standings earlier in the year as they really struggled out of the gates. However, a recovery to the tune of six straight wins got them right back into playoff contention. They’ve since cooled off once again and now trail the top seven by four points. The introduction of the Wildcard system in this season of the MLS means that Montreal is only two points behind ninth-place Charlotte as we approach the halfway point in the regular season.
Minnesota come into this fixture looking to put an end to a four match winless run. Their last match was a 1-1 home draw with Toronto, marking the second draw in the last three. The Loons have also experienced a strange campaign so far as their away form has been better than their performances at the Allianz Field. Minnesota have recorded just a single win in seven home outings, although they have suffered only one loss as well. On the road, Minnesota have been able to win four of their nine trips but suffered a 2-1 defeat to Austin in their most recent away match. Minnesota are holding on to the seventh-seed in the Western Conference by just a single point over eighth-place Austin. Their 15 goals scored is tied for the third-lowest in the West. However, the return of star number 10 Emanuel Reynoso will go a long way to remedying their attacking woes. The Argentine came off the bench in the 65th minute of the teams 1-1 draw with Toronto for his first appearance of the season.
Both teams could really use a victory here to boost their playoff chances. Minnesota have been the much more defensively solid team so far this season with 18 goals conceded compared to Montreal’s 27. Where they visitors have struggled, however, has been their ability to create quality scoring chances. The return of Reynoso should go a long way to fixing that. The former Boca Juniors midfielder will add a much needed spark to the Loons attacking potential and his inclusion here could be enough to ultimately make the difference. Our Montreal vs Minnesota prediction is Minnesota on the double chance.
