Cameroon are set to take on Serbia in their second game of Group G at the Al Janoub Stadium on Monday as the two nations play catch up to Brazil and Switzerland, the other two sides facing off in the group. Both Cameroon and Serbia lost their opening games and are thus occupants of the bottom two places in this group. Serbia are bottom, having conceded two goals. Cameroon come into this game firmly as the underdogs after their 1-0 defeat to Switzerland. That was Cameroon’s fifth straight winless game; they have three losses in that period and will hope that their attack clicks, after a rather weak showing in attack against the Swiss.
They did put up a strong defensive performance though it wasn’t enough to lock out Switzerland, who scored through Cameroonian-born forward Breel Embolo. Cameroon have two clean sheets only in their last 10 matches and this will concern Rigobert Song, their manager, and an established defender back in the day. They also need to improve their win rate, having managed just two wins in the last 10 games. That, and the fact that they haven’t been scoring regularly in recent matches, is enough to drain the confidence in the team. While Cameroon are one of the most successful African teams and one of only two African nations to have reached the World Cup quarter finals, they don’t have a very good World Cup record. In their last 17 World Cup matches, the indomitable Lions have only managed one win and their loss to Switzerland was the eighth straight at the World Cup.
They have also failed to score in five of the last eight World Cup matches. Coming into this competition, Bayern Munich forward Erick Choupo-moting was their most in-form forward but he failed to click in the opening game and was eventually substituted for Vincent Aboubakar, who also had little to show in way of goal effort. Cameroon’s only meeting with Serbia was way back in 2010 and Choupo-moting was on target as Serbia won 4-3.
Serbia will take a bit of credit for having held Brazil goalless in the opening half of their first game. They were more compact and their game management tactics worked well. However, things were different in the second, and they conceded twice in 11 minutes. They will go into this game as favorites and hoping that things work in their favor. Compared to Brazil, this is an easier opponent to plan for, and having won three of their last four matches means they have the better run.
Serbia have failed to score once in the last seven matches and the loss to Brazil was just their first in seven games. In five of their last seven matches, they have scored two or more goals, which places them well to shock the Cameroonians in the state of their defence. Serbia will hope their forwards Aleksandr Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic are fit enough for this game as there have been doubts over their status. Vlahovic started from the bench while Mitrovic had little impact against Brazil in the opening game.
Serbia haven’t had a good run at the World Cup, losing eight of their last 10 matches, including their opening game here against Brazil. However, they will be favorites here taking on a poorer side in World Cup matches. That will not be the most telling stat though; Cameroon are winless in their last five matches and have struggled both in attack and defence. With the kind of attackers in Serbia’s fold, we will back them to win here.
