The match

The first of eight qualifying matches for the 2024 European Championship sees Bulgaria hosting Montenegro at the Huvepharma Arena for this Group G clash. This looks set to be a competitive group with Serbia, Hungary and Lithuania making up the rest of the participants. Both Bulgaria and Montenegro will be desperate to get off to a fast start before having to face off against the favorites to advance in Serbia and Hungary. Bulgaria comes into this matchup off the back of two friendly matches at the end of 2022; a 2-0 away win over Cyprus followed by a 0-0 away draw with Luxembourg in the team’s most recent outing. The Lions are on the up since appointing Mladen Krstajic to take over the management duties of the team. Bulgaria is unbeaten under Krstajic, with the team winning its first three matches before the previously mentioned draw with Luxembourg.

Montenegro is a team seemingly heading in the opposite direction as the Brave Falcons have not tasted victory since June of 2022. Montenegro is coming off a 1-0 away loss with Slovenia at the end of 2022, one of two friendly matches that the team played since their third-place finish in Group 3 League B of the UEFA Nations League. They’ve now lost three of their last four matches and worryingly were kept off the scoresheet three times during that stretch. Montenegro has not qualified for a European Championship since 2004, when the nation was still referred to as ‘Serbia and Montenegro’. Their Nations League campaign was not a total disaster however, as the side managed to win two matches and draw once. They also picked up a 3-0 away win over Romania in June so will be optimistic of a result in Razgrad.

Key Statistics

  • Bulgaria has scored in three of its last four matches, netting a total of eight goals during that stretch.
  • Bulgaria has kept a clean sheet in its last three consecutive matches.
  • Bulgaria has a solid record of four wins, one draw and only one defeat at home in their last six matches.
  • Montenegro has failed to score in three of its last four matches.

The bet of our experts

These are two very evenly matched teams and the FIFA rankings has them only two places apart. However, with the purple patch in form that Bulgaria is experiencing under its new manager combined with Montenegro’s downturn in form, we like the hosts to get the three points here. With our stake being returned should the match end in a draw, we view this as a relatively low-risk bet with the hosts the more likely of the two sides to come out with the victory. Our Bulgaria vs Montenegro prediction: Bulgaria draw no bet
