The two sides at the bottom of Group I in the Euro 2024 qualifiers will clash when Belarus plays host to Israel on Friday. The hosts are yet to register a single point after their first two matches and currently sit at the foot of the table. They were beaten 2-1 by Romania in their last game, which came just three days after a 5-0 drubbing by Switzerland. Belarus also lost to Oman in a friendly last November, meaning they come into this encounter on a three-match losing streak. Over their last ten matches, Belarus have won just one, which came in a friendly over Syria last year. They drew three and lost the other six matches in that time. At home, the hosts have won just two of their last ten matches and are winless in their last four, including two draws and two losses. This will likely be their best opportunity to pick up a win in these qualifiers.
Israel have been only marginally better than their opponents in this competition, currently second-from-bottom with one point after their first two matches. They held Kosovo to a 1-1 draw in their opening match but were then beaten 3-0 by the formidable-looking Switzerland. The visitors were very good in the Nations League last year, finishing ahead of Iceland and Albania in their group and unbeaten in their four matches. Since then, though, they’ve been on a downward trajectory and come into this one, having only won one of their last five and winless in their last three. Israel have lost their last two away games, but like their opponents, they will feel that this is a match they must win if they are to stand any chance of competing for a qualification spot.
Both sides desperately need the win here, which will likely result in them going all out in attack, potentially leaving gaps in their backline. With two relatively poor defenses on display, we could be treated to a handful of goals at either end. Our Belarus vs Israel prediction: Over 2.5 goals.
