With Wales showing no signs of slowing down in Pool ‘D’ of the Rugby World Cup, Australia (second, 11 points) will hope they can confirm their second spot in the group with a big win over Georgia (fourth, five points).
The Wallabies have two wins in the tournament – a 39-21 win over Fiji in their tournament opener and a 45-10 walloping of Uruguay in their most recent match. However, it is their loss to Wales (25-29) that will rankle them the most. It was a game that was decided by the first-half performance, as Australia were trailing 23-8 at the break. With Wales defeating Fiji, it is now academic that Australia finish second in the pool and take on England in the quarter-final. The Wallabies continue to make squad changes, with Nic White and Matt Tomua reunited at no. 9 and 10. Samu Kerevi and James O’Connor back in the mid-field.
Georgia will hope to sign off in style, but know that they are up against the tide. They have just one win in the tournament – a 33-7 win over Uruguay that was preceded and succeeded by losses to Wales (43-14) and Fiji (45-10). This is the first time that they are playing Australia, but considering the Wallabies’ record against Tier 2 nations Georgia’s chances are limited. The best-case scenario for Georgia would be to avoid losing by heavy margin and thereby winning a bonus point. That will help them avoid the wooden spoon in the pool, but even that looks a remote possibility.
Australia will be looking to get into rhythm ahead of their quarter-final, but that shouldn’t alter much in terms of the result. Expect the Wallabies to trounce the Georgians with a bonus point.
