The match

A spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup round of 16 is on the line when Denmark take on Australia for this Group C clash at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah on Wednesday. Both teams will enter this fixture knowing that a win will guarantee them passage into the next round, although it is Australia with a bit more leeway as to potential qualification routes. The Socceroos’ crucial 1-0 victory over Tunisia in the previous matchday means they can also qualify for the next round with a draw, as long as France take care of business and defeat Tunisia. Denmark, on the other hand, are looking at a ‘do or die’ scenario in which they simply must win in order to claim a second-place finish and a spot in the final 16. Denmark were held to a goalless draw against Tunisia in the opening match before falling 2-1 to France in the previous matchday.

Denmark desperately need an injection of attacking impetus heading into this matchup with Australia. The Danes have failed to score from open play in this tournament so far, with their lone goal coming via defender Andreas Christensen by way of a set piece against France. Manager Kasper Hjulmand therefore could opt for a more offensive approach to this match than the 3-4-2-1 system deployed against the French. Strikers Kasper Dolberg and Martin Braithwaite will both be pushing for a start after sub appearances against France as Denmark could opt for a two striker system while moving influential playmaker Christian Eriksen into the #10 position just behind. The only injury concern for the manager is Thomas Delaney, who picked up a knee injury in the opener and will miss the rest of the tournament.

Australia manager Graham Arnold is unlikely to make changes to the starting 11 that secured the 1-0 victory over Tunisia in the previous match. Mitchell Duke should lead the line for the Aussies after his match winning performance the last time out while stalwarts Matthew Ryan and Aaron Mooy will be crucial to the Socceroos chances of qualification. Ultimately, this Denmark side should have too much quality for Australia to deal with and a win for the Danish Dynamite looks to be on the cards here.

Key Statistics

  • Australia have only one win, one draw and six defeats in their last eight World Cup matches.
  • Australia have lost three straight against teams ranked 25th or better, being outscored 8-2 in the process.
  • Denmark have lost only once to teams ranked outside of FIFA’s top 15 over their last 22 matches.
  • Denmark have kept three clean sheets over their last six World Cup matches.
  • Denmark have only failed to score twice in their last 10 matches.

The bet of our experts

Both teams come into this match with the belief that they can progress to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup. Australia may well take a defensive-minded approach in this one as they know a draw will likely see them through with France being heavy favorites to defeat Tunisia. Denmark have been tipped as a popular dark horse pick but risk going out of the group stages if they are unable to record a victory here. Manager Kasper Hjulmand could therefore opt for a more attacking mentality, especially with his team struggling to find the net in Qatar. This Denmark side is a close-knit group who have dealt with their share of adversaries over the years. Back the Danes to get the job done, win the match and secure a second consecutive appearance in the round of 16.
