A battle in the Eastern Conference of the 2023 MLS season sees fifth-place Atlanta United hosting seventh-place DC United. Both teams will be hoping to build up some breathing space between themselves and the bottom eight teams who are chasing a postseason berth. Atlanta currently holds a one point lead over sixth-place Columbus and trail East leaders Cincinnati by 14 points. DC United hold a slim goals scored lead over eighth-place Orlando, who they are even with on both points and goal differential. A win for DC United here combined with Columbus failing to win would move them all the way up to fifth in the standings.
Atlanta United have failed to win since May 17th and have seen their last four matches end in stalemates. Their most recent league fixture was a 0-0 away draw to defending champions LAFC although they were quite fortunate to walk away with a point in that meeting. LAFC created the majority of the chances as Atlanta failed to register a single shot on goal. Carlos Vela would even miss a penalty in the 76th minute for Los Angeles in what was overall a very frustrating performance for the champions. It’s now up to the Five Stripes to respond strongly on their home pitch where they have largely put up encouraging results. During Atlanta’s current four match run of draws, three have come on the road while only one has come at home. At the Mercedes-Benz Stadium this season, Atlanta United have posted five wins from eight fixtures and have recorded only a single loss.
DC United have been slightly worse on their travels in the 2023 MLS season. They’ve earned an average of 1.50 points per home match compared to 1.22 on average as the visiting team. Wayne Rooney’s men are coming off a 2-1 away win over Inter Miami in their last competitive fixture which snapped a four away game winless run. The win was only DC’s second victory in the last eight matches overall. The Black-and-Red were well deserving off the three points in their last performance over lowly Inter Miami, dominating the possession, shots and clear cut chances created. They’ll be hoping to carry over that same type of performance into Atlanta in a match that is shaping up quite well for goals.
Atlanta matches have seen plenty of goals this season; their 32 goals scored is the second-highest mark in the MLS. Meanwhile, they have struggled to keep their opponents out with their 28 goals allowed also ranking as the second-highest amount. With DC United coming off an excellent attacking display which saw them create six clear cut scoring chances and netting twice, backing goals looks to be the way to go for this one. This is an attractive price on the over which presents a good bit of value. Our Atlanta United vs DC United prediction is for over 2.5 goals to be scored.
