Arsenal are coming from a good run and will be out to extend the same in the League Cup when they play host to League One side Sunderland. The Gunners have registered three straight wins ahead of this game and though some changes are expected in the team selection, they should still be strong enough to take on Sunderland. They are coming from a 4-1 win over Leeds United, the fourth time in five matches that they managed two or more goals. However, it is their home form that firmly reinforces their status as the favorites here. Arsenal have only lost once at home this season, and that was against a very strong Chelsea earlier in the season. They are unbeaten in the last 10 home matches, winning nine. In their last five home matches, they’ve kept clean sheets and in the last 10, they’ve scored two or more goals in eight.
Sunderland’s last encounter with Arsenal was back in 2017, and they have no win in their last 12 matches against Arsenal. They were both in the Premier League when they faced off, with Arsenal winning 2-0, but now Sunderland are two tiers below. Sunderland go to this game aware that Arsenal have already eliminated a League One, Championship and Premier League side in the last three rounds. They won’t want to join that fray but this is going to be their toughest encounter yet in this competition. They’ve eliminated two Championship sides and will hope to cause the biggest upset here. The League One side has been poor defensively though, and this will be a concern against the free-scoring Arsenal. In their last five matches, Sunderland have one clean sheet only and both teams have scored in three of the five matches. Away from home, they have one win in five and no clean sheet in the process.
Sunderland haven’t been great in matches against Arsenal and they will definitely walk into this game as the underdogs, considering Arsenal’s form ahead of this game. The Gunners have done well at home too, and they look like they can lead in both halves in this game.
