Argentina take on Mexico in the second matchday of Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Argentina will be desperate to bounce back with a convincing win after being on the wrong end of one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. The 2-1 loss to 71st ranked Saudi Arabia has been the talk of the tournament in the early stages as players and fans of La Albiceleste were left stunned at the events that transpired on Tuesday. While the Saudis were brave defensively and of course played an unbelievable match, it must be said that on another day the Argentines could have been up by multiple goals at half time. The result is a complete shake-up of Group C with Saudi Arabia currently the leaders while Mexico and Poland share second and third-place after playing out to a goalless draw in their opening match.
Mexico were clearly the better side in their match against Poland but ultimately couldn’t find the breakthrough. A Guillermo Ochoa penalty save on Robert Lewandowski saved them from what would have been a disheartening defeat but the Mexicans will likely still feel that they missed out on an opportunity to put themselves in a commanding position within the group, exponentially so given Argentina’s shock defeat. The Tricolor are now faced with the prospect of defeating an Argentina side ranked third in the world and a team that they have lost to in nine of their last 10 meetings. This is a good ‘buy low’ spot on Argentina after the historic defeat to Saudi Arabia to open their campaign. While some may certainly be souring on the Argentine’s chances, it shouldn’t dissuade you from backing Messi and company to respond strongly and still put together a strong run in the tournament. La Albiceleste are still an immensely talented side and are well-deserving of their odds as the second favorite team to lift the World Cup trophy behind Brazil.
We’re going to back Argentina to get the win in this match. As we mentioned, this is a great spot to back a team that the general betting public might be somewhat down on given their opening match loss. It also presents us with a good opportunity to get some solid value as this line could easily have gone past the 1.50 mark had Argentina recorded a comfortable win over Saudi Arabia. While the more positive team for much of the match against Poland, Mexico didn’t show enough going forward to believe that they will cause this Argentinian defense too much trouble.
