West Ham United last beat Brighton in the topflight in 1983, and they will be looking to end that run when they host the Seagulls in their third Premier league game of the season. This game finds West Ham second from bottom, without a point after two games while Brighton, on four points, are eighth. The Hammers managed their first win of the season in the UEFA Conference League play-off game against Viborg. A 3-1 victory at home was the first time in four matches that West Ham managed to score, but for the fourth time in five matches they failed to keep a clean sheet. They have suffered two straight defeats in the league and their home form in the league doesn’t look too great. The hosts have no win in four straight league games, losing two. David Moyes will be happy that his forward line ticked the right boxes against Viborg with Gianluca Scamacca scoring their first goal of the season then Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio securing the win. It is however the lengthy winless run against Brighton that he will want to end.
Brighton are emerging as one of the toughest teams to face in the league. This season they have already beaten Manchester United. They are unbeaten in the last 10 meetings with West Ham but in that run the two have drawn six. Brighton last lost to West Ham in 2012 in the Championship and they have reason to believe they are stronger going into this game. The fact that they had a free week as West Ham played in the Conference League should motivate Brighton, who come into this game unbeaten in the last three matches. In their last game, they drew 0-0 with Newcastle United, and a five-game unbeaten run away from home points to Brighton being the stronger side here. Their only loss in the last six away league games was against Manchester City, and they have won four of the remaining five.
West Ham United have their first win of the season but coming back to the Premier League they will have stiffer opposition than Viborg in the Conference League. They don’t have a very strong run at home and this will be an area for Brighton to exploit. Brighton are unbeaten in their last three games, and their away run is better, with four wins in five and we will back them to beat West Ham United here.
