Southampton really need to get a good result from this home game against Ipswich Town. They are down to ninth in the Championship and that's six places below their opponents. The Saints lost 4-1 at home to Leicester City last Friday. That followed a 5-0 thrashing at Sunderland the previous weekend. Two losses are bad enough but conceding nine goals in them is a nightmare. That made it 16 goals conceded in their six Championship matches, the worst defence in the league. Home form has produced a win over QPR, a 4-4 draw with Norwich and the defeat by Leicester. That's nine goals conceded at home and they ended last season with a 4-4 draw at St Mary's with Liverpool. They have lost key players since their relegation from the Premier League last season. It's been mainly in midfield that they have lost players and somehow they have to stop conceding so many goals.
Ipswich Town are only a point behind leaders Preston North End and only outside the top two on goal difference. Five of their six games in the Championship this season have been won, the other a 4-3 home loss to Leeds United. They have won all three of their away league games with victories at Sunderland, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday. The last two of those wins have been achieved without concedng a goal. They are unbeaten in their last 12 away league and cup games and have a good chance here of making it 13. With Southampton struggling, we go for an away win in this match.
