Tenth seed Karolina Muchova is in her first US Open quarter final. The Czech faces the 30th seeded Sorana Cirstea for a place in the last four. Whoever wins this match will take on either sixth seeded Cori Gauff or 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko who beat Iga Swiatek in the last 16. Muchova is having an excellent year and reached the final at Roland Garros earlier this summer. The Czech lost in the first round at Wimbledon but her last tournament saw her get to the final in Cincinnati where she was beaten by in-form Coco Gauff. Those performances have taken her into the top ten for the first time and a win here will see her climb to at least eigth. Muchova has lost just one set on her way to this quarter final. That was in the last round when dropping the middle set to Wang Xinyu. This is her fifth match against Cirstea with three of them having been won. Three of the matches have been played this year with Muchova winning two of them, most recently being the victor in Montreal.
Sorana Cirstea is in top form and has beaten two seeds already in New York. Round three saw her defeat the fourth seeded Elena Rybakina and followed that with a win over 15th seed Belinda Bencic. The world number 30 is up to 26th in the live rankings. A win here would see her rise another four places. That'd be only one place below the career high Cirstea achieved ten years ago. Cirstea is in only her second Grand Slam quarter final. It's been a long wait as the other was at Roland Garros in 2009. We go for over 21.5 games to be played in this match.
