Slovan Bratislava and FC Basel have it all to play for in the return leg of their Europa Conference League last-16 tie. Both teams played to a 2-2 draw in the first-leg match last week. Slovan have stuttered since resuming competitive action last month after a lengthy winter break and have won only three of their eight matches this year. They suffered their first loss of 2023 over the weekend as they went down 1-0 at home to MSK Zilina. Vladimir Weiss’ charges have had a penchant for goals this year and the game against Zilina was the first time that they have failed to find the back of the net. They had relied heavily on their vibrant attack to keep their unbeaten start to the year going as in defence they have struggled and haven’t kept a clean sheet. Basel scored two against them in the first match and should once again be expected to breach their rearguard.
Basel have also been struggling with consistency and even though they come into this match on a seven-match unbeaten run, they have won just three of those matches. Heiko Vogel’s men followed up their first leg draw with another stalemate (1-1) against St. Gallen 1879 over the weekend. Theyhave been vibrant in attack but have a leaky defence.
Basel and Slovan Bratislava have had issues with consistency coming into this match which makes it all the more interesting to see who will come out on top. There is a high possibility that penalties could decide this one. Our take though is that Slovan Bratislava v FC Basel will see both teams score.
