After a season to forget, Sheffield United are back in the Championship hoping to scratch and claw their way into contention for promotion once again. The Blades finished 20th in the Premier League last term after an impressive first season in the top-flight a year prior. United finished 9th in their first season back but a dismal campaign in 2020/21 saw the departing of Chris Wilder and the downfall of the team. They lost 29 of their 38 league games last season but their last Championship season saw them finish 2nd with 89 points after losing just nine of their 46 league matches. They are back to do it all again and they start at home to Birmingham who finished 18th last season. Lee Bowyer took charge in March and will be entering his first full season as manager of the Blues.
Slavisa Jokanovic is now at the helm at Bramall Lane and he will be hoping to lead Sheffield United back to the top-tier. They have, however, failed to win any of the last five meetings with Birmingham and drew 0-0 when these sides last met at this venue in September 2018. Birmingham took 30 points from a possible 69 on their travels last season winning seven times but they were beaten 3-2 by Northampton in a pre-season friendly on the road back in July. Jokanovic has led both Watford (2014/15) and Fulham (2017/18) to promotion from the Championship before while Lee Bowyer has been a popular appointment for Blues and he is hoping to brighten the skies above Birmingham as it’s been a disappointing decade since their League Cup win in 2011.
