It will be an interesting battle for a place in the rescheduled Euro 2020 Championships as Serbia welcome Scotland to the Red Star Stadium in Belgrade. Serbia have never qualified for a European Championship as an independent nation and would be gunning for a big push here. Scotland, on the other hand, haven’t reached a major tournament since 1998 and will be looking to snatch this golden opportunity.
Serbia edged out Norway 2-1 via extra-time in Oslo with both goals scored by Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. With the likes of Luka Jovic and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the side, Serbia have a very strong unit that can continue what they did in Oslo. Interestingly, Serbia could only manage to finish third in the qualification campaign in Group ‘B’ behind Ukraine and Portugal finishing with four wins, two draws and two losses. More importantly, Serbia have picked up only one point at home against Ukraine and Portugal. Equally worrying is their recent form that has seen no wins in their last six matches during regular time, losing two and drawing four.
Scotland have not qualified for the Euro finals since 1996 and the repeated heartbreaks over the last couple of decades have only made their fans more resilient. Scotland needed penalties to go past Israel in the play-offs after being held to a goalless draw at regular time. However, Steve Clarke’s side has won six matches in an unbeaten eight-match run (at regulation time) and have kept a clean sheet in their last three matches. Before their match against Israel, Scotland have won their last three Euro qualifying matches, but have otherwise struggled in the qualification campaign. Scotland finished third behind Belgium and Russia in Group ‘I’ with five wins and losses each. Losing all four matches against those above them has hurt Scotland’s chances.
Serbia have struggled in the Euro qualifiers against top teams and even at home, they have won just three of their last nine Euro home qualifiers – drawing two and losing four. Scotland have won just three of their last 11 away Euro qualifiers losing six and drawing two. Four of those losses have come without scoring and more importantly, six of their last seven Euro away qualifiers have seen only one side score. We are backing the same in this match – at least one clean sheet.
