You could probably hear the anguished cries from Fulham fans on Wednesday evening. Their striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice for Serbia as they beat Ireland 3-2. The striker has scored the same number of goals for Fulham as they try to avoid relegation. In fact, he's only scored in one Fulham game this season, both coming against Leeds last September. Yet he's scored three goals for Serbia this season and will hope for more when they host Portugal. Serbia are now unbeaten in their last six internationals and have eight goals in their last two home games against Russia and Ireland. They had struggled before that though and only avoided relegation in the Nations League on head-to-head results with Turkey. Before those two wins, they'd only won two of the last seven at home, that includes a 4-2 loss to Portugal in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Portugal are the favourites to win Group A and after the first set of games, are second behind Serbia. The Portuguese opened the group with a 1-0 home win over Azerbaijan and the winner was a first half own goal. They would have expected more goals considering they had 29 goal chances and 15 on target. It was their seventh clean sheet in the last nine internationals. Ten away games have been played since their 2018 World Cup exit and only Ukraine have beaten them. Three out of four have been won since that 2019 defeat, the other a draw in France. Hopefully their shooting boots will be on this time and they can win this game to stamp their authority on this group.
