Goias are one of the three teams staring relegation in the face of relegation from the Brasileirao. They are placed 19th, six from safety after three consecutive defeats and take on a Santos side who aren’t giving up on qualifying for the Copa Libertadores. The home side are 9th with 45 points just six points off the Libertadores places. A disappointing defeat away in Fortaleza in midweek came after back-to-back victories for Santos. Wins over Botafogo and Sao Paulo came either side of a Copa Libertadores semi-final win over Boca Juniors. Santos will take on Palmeiras in the final of the competition at the end of the month but unless they win the tournament outright, Santos could be forced to watch on from the side-lines next season. Santos have eight games to play and three of them are against the sides who are directly above them at this time. A meeting with Gremio who are 6th on the 3rd of February will be a huge game but they can’t afford to slip up prior to that fixture, so a win here is paramount.
Goias finished comfortably in mid-table last season with a total of 52 points leaving them in 10th. However, this season they have struggled and have accumulated just half of the total points they ended up with last year sitting in 19th with 26 points to their name. The visitors have lost six of their last 10 games which has essentially condemned them to relegation. They are six points adrift with just seven games left to play and their away record doesn’t provide encouragement coming into this game. Goias have won just two of their 15 away league games and although both those wins have come in the past month, they have only taken 10 points from a possible 45 on the road.
