This Rhone Derby will have significant ramifications for each of these rivals who are battling it out at opposite ends of the table. Lyon makes the trip to Saint Etienne off the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Metz last weekend which saw them slip to 3rd. As for the hosts, they too were beaten 1-0 on Sunday by Strasbourg plunging Saint Etienne into further danger at the bottom of the table.
The Saints find themselves in 16th after 20 games having won just four of those matches. St Etienne have picked up just 19 points from a possible 60, 10 of which have been attained at home. The hosts have drawn seven of their league matches so far, including each of their last four at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Saint Etienne took the lead in three of those four games but were pegged back and they are currently on a five-game winless run in Ligue 1 which has seen them slip down the table. Claude Puel’s team won each of their first three games at the start of the season but have managed just one win in 17 fixtures since.
As for Lyon, they are looking to get back on the winning trail and make a surge for the summit once more. Lyon led the way in Ligue 1 heading into last weekend but a miserable loss at Metz seen them slip to 3rd with both PSG and Lille taking advantage. Nonetheless, they hold a four-point lead over Monaco in the race for the final Champions League place, and their away record is the second-best in the league so they should maintain that gap at least. Only PSG (20) have taken more points on the road than Lyon have with 19. The visitors are unbeaten in eight away matches have won four of their last five games on the road, including a victory in Paris.
