Real Sociedad will welcome French giants PSG at the Reale Arena on Tuesday for their Champions League Round of 16 return leg. The French side leads 2-0 from the opening leg in France. Real Sociedad hopes to overturn this but that will call for massive improvement from their recent lows. The Spanish side comes into this game on the back of three straight winless outings. The most recent of these was a 3-2 loss to Sevilla in La Liga on Saturday. Here, Sociedad will be playing to avoid elimination from a second cup competition in a matter of weeks. They recently lost, albeit on penalties, to Mallorca in the Copa Del Rey semifinals. For Mallorca, that was perfect revenge after losing to Sociedad in the league game right before that. It however remains their only win in nine matches, a poor run coming into such a big game. Real Sociedad needs to conjure a win here to advance; at the minimum a two-goal margin win. The first of their troubles however, is that they have no clean sheet in their last six matches. In three of their last five matches, they conceded two or more goals. Meanwhile, they failed to score in any of their last three Champions League matches. The Spaniards were particularly wasteful in the first leg, and it could haunt them.
PSG are in command in this tie but they’ll know a 2-0 lead isn’t insurmountable, based on past experience in Spain. They have no clean sheet away to Spanish teams in the last 12 Champions League matches. The most remembered of these games was against Barcelona in 2016/17 when they lost a 4-0 first leg lead. While PSG come into this game without a win in their last two matches, they are expected to manage this well. They are coming from a 0-0 draw with Monaco, which had its fair share of sideshows as Kylian Mbappe was subbed at half time. The Frenchman opted to sit with his month in the stands instead of his team mates on the bench. Led by a Spaniard, Luis Enrique, PSG carry into this game a 20-match unbeaten run. The last time they lost, coincidentally, was in an away Champions League game, at AC Milan. That’s their only loss in 26 matches. In their first leg win over Sociedad, PSG ended a three-game winless run in the Champions League. It hasn’t been a great run for the Parisians in their recent Champions League matches. They have four losses and just three wins in their last nine Champions League matches.
PSG have a commanding lead coming into this game and have the squad strength to defend this lead. Their hosts haven't been at their best in recent matches and have also failed to score in their last three Champions League games. Real Sociedad have a really poor home run, winless in the last seven in all competitions. That, and their first leg misses will not make for a confident approach to this game. Our prediction for Real Sociedad v PSG is for PSG to win.
