Second seeded Aryna Sabalenka bids to reach her third successive US Open semi-final. Standing in her way is the 23rd seed Qinwen Zhang who is in her first Grand Slam quarter final. It's been a massive week for Sabalenka as it's been confirmed that the 25-year-old will be the world number one in the next ranking list. That means she'll be top of both the overall list and the WTA Race and with substantial leads if winning this US Open. Sabalenka has become the most consistent player in Grand Slams and has reached at least the semi-finals in the last four tournaments. That included winning the Australian Open at the start of this year. Dominant form has been shown by her in this tournament with four straight sets wins and only 16 games dropped. No one has yet won four games in a set against her so far.
Qinwen Zheng began this tournament ranked 23rd in the world but is up a place in the live rankings. A win over Sabalenka will take her up to 17th and that will beat her career high of 19th achieved three months ago. The 20-year-old Chinese player had a previous best of a fourth round in Grand Slam events. This is only her second time in the main draw of the US Open and last year saw her defeated in the third round. 2023 hadn't been going well in Grand Slam events with her not getting past the second round in the first three held. It's gone much better in New York though and in the last round Zheng beat Ons Jabeur. Two sets have been dropped by her on the way to this quarter final. We believe her run ends here and Sabalenka can win in straight sets.
