The Philippines will make their FIFA Women’s World Cup debut on Friday when they play Switzerland in Group A. This will also be the first ever encounter between these two nations. The Philippines qualified for their first-ever World Cup via the Asia Cup where they finished among the four best teams. This is also the first time that the country will be represented at a FIFA World Cup by any of its national teams. Alen Stajcic’s charges arrive for the tournament in superb shape. They have won five of their last six matches. The Filipinas dominated in this run scoring 19 goals and conceding just twice. In their last match, they defeated Vietnam, also present in this year’s tournament, 2-1. This however was more than two months ago and failing to play any build-up matches could end up being a problem. The Philippines are ranked 46th in FIFA world rankings.
Switzerland aren’t new to this stage but they aren’t regulars either. This is only the European nation’s second appearance at a FIFA Women’s World Cup. They made their debut in 2015 and qualified for the round of 16. Inka Grings’ charges will be out to surpass this and set a new country record. La Nati have been active all the way through to the start of the tournament and played several friendlies to help prepare. They however have struggled in the lead-up to this match and arrive having not won in seven straight matches. Despite finding it hard to win, they have made it equally hard for opponents also and have lost only twice in this period. Switzerland’s final build-up match was a 0-0 draw with Morocco, also taking part in this year’s tournament. They are currently ranked 20th in the world.
The two nations have shown in matches leading up to this encounter that they are decent attacking teams. Our prediction for the Philippines v Switzerland is for both teams to score.
