The CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers enter the second matchday with sixth-place Peru hosting first-place Brazil. Peru had all hands on deck in their opener against Paraguay as them attempted to hold on to a point after being reduced to 10 men. The Peruvians had to hold strong through the entire second half but were ultimately able to secure a hard-fought 0-0 draw. It will undoubtedly be seen as a positive result considering the circumstances and that they were playing away from home. They’ll now kick off their first home match of the notoriously difficult South American qualifiers with the welcome of the world’s third-ranked side in Brazil. Peru just missed out on the Qatar World Cup after being beaten by Australia on penalties in the playoff final. La Blanquirroja have now only managed to qualify once in the past 10 editions of the World Cup. The goalless draw to Paraguay in their last match means that Peru are now on a run of only one win in their last five fixtures.
Brazil started somewhat slowly in their opener at home against Bolivia, taking a 1-0 scoreline into the break. It was disappointing, as the Brazilians had created a number of high quality scoring chances and easily could have putten the game to bed in the first 45 minutes. They would respond in the second half with a brilliant attacking display, netting a further four goals to wrap up a 5-1 win over the Bolivians. They’ll face their first true test in this match with a trip to Lima to take on the 21st-ranked nation in Peru. Brazil usually has little trouble dealing with their South American opposition in qualifiers as they recorded an unbeaten 14-3-0 record for the 2022 tournament. Prior to that, they had lost only once in the Russia 2018 qualifying campaign. The big win over Bolivia was a much-needed confidence booster as Brazil has struggled through a bumpy patch of form. Their latest victory was only the team’s third in the last seven games dating back to the 2022 World Cup.
The oddsmakers have the Brazilians as heavy favorites which is understandable when comparing the head-to-head record between these two. Peru are not in a good run of form at the moment, especially on the attacking side of the ball where they have scored just twice in the past 450 minutes of football. Brazil are loaded with attacking talent and shouldn’t have too much trouble breaching this Peruvian backline. A two goal victory for the visitors looks likely given the hosts’ lack of offensive threat. Our Peru vs Brazil prediction is for Brazil to win on the -1 European handicap.
