Nottingham Forest and Manchester United turn their attention to the FA Cup with the former hosting this fifth-round tie. This is the third meeting between the two this season and the first outside the Premier League. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals. Nottingham Forest qualified for this round after defeating Bristol City on penalties in a replay in the fourth round. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men had drawn the first match 0-0 and then the second 1-1 after regulation time. It is the second time in the last three seasons that they have made it to the fifth round. Forest have struggled with inconsistency all through the season and have managed just eight wins across all competitions. They are coming off a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa this past weekend that left them just above the relegation zone in the Premier League.
Manchester United are also coming off a league defeat. Erik ten Hag’s men were defeated 2-1 at home by Fulham to see a five-match winning run come to an end. They will be eager to get right back on the horse and avoid getting back to their early season misfortunes. United are 12-time champions of the FA Cup. Last season they finished as runners-up after losing 2-1 in the final to cross-city rivals Manchester City. To advance to this round, the Red Devils defeated Newport County 4-2 away from home. Both matches that they have played in this season’s edition have had the Premier League side as the away team. United and Forest have already played each other home and away in the league this season. They won their home match but lost 2-1 at the City Ground back in December. This ended a 10-match winning streak in this fixture.
Our prediction for Nottingham Forest v Manchester United is for both teams to score. Manchester United have been in exceptional goal-scoring form in the lead-up to this match but have also struggled to keep clean sheets. This has also been the case for Nottingham Forest who have scored at an almost similar rate as they have conceded. As this is a knockout tie, we expect both teams to set up in an attacking fashion.
