The 2023 MLS season enters matchday nine with the upstart, Eastern Conference leading New England Revolution hosting a struggling Sporting KC team that finds itself rock-bottom of the West. The Revs were seconds away from securing a huge three points last weekend when they took on the Columbus Crew before ultimately conceding eight minutes into stoppage time. Still, Bruce Arena should be relatively happy with the result given that the New England head coach probably would’ve taken a draw if offered before the match. The result means that the Revolution are now unbeaten in their last five MLS matches although have been forced to settle for a draw in two of the last three. New England now returns to Gillette Stadium where they have yet to lose and have won three of their four matches. The Revs’ last outing at this Stadium resulted in a 4-0 win over Montreal and they will likely be expecting a similarly dominating performance here.
It’s certainly not been the start to the 2023 season that head coach Peter Vermes will have hoped for as he attempts to improve a Sporting KC team that finished 12th in the Western Conference last season. Sporting, along with the LA Galaxy, remain the only two teams yet to win this season. Sporting are coming off an uninspired performance which saw them fall to a 3-0 away defeat against San Jose last weekend, making it back-to-back losses for the 2013 MLS Cup winners. The visitors' woes this season stem largely from their inability to put the ball in the net as they have now managed only two goals total in eight matches. Kansas City have now failed to find the net in their last three consecutive matches and are coming up against a New England team that is tied for the third-best defensive record in the league.
It’s going to be difficult for Sporting KC to get their first win of the season against the red-hot New England Revolution here. The Revs have been rolling at home and if not for an 80th minute equalizer by Talles Magno when they played NYCFC, would be a perfect four wins from four at Gillette Stadium with not a single goal conceded. Sporting have looked utterly toothless going forward this season and their two goals is the lowest total in the MLS. Expect New England to control the match and cruise to a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory. Our New England Revolution vs Sporting KC prediction: New England to win
