The match

Manchester United’s season is on the verge of a collapse, as they host Chelsea in an important match that could decide the top-four race. The Red Devils have seen their season come shattering down, with seven losses in their last nine matches (W2, L7) in all competitions. That run saw them exit from the FA Cup, the Champions League and lose momentum in the top-four race. It was only due to Chelsea dropping points and Arsenal not taking advantage that United are still only three points behind top-four. Anything other than three points against Chelsea will be curtains for their hopes of finishing in the top-four. They will have to make history too, as United have beaten Chelsea in their last two league home matches and haven’t won three in a row at Old Trafford since January 1957. More importantly, they have lost only once at home since August 2018, to City in the midweek. Chelsea were held 2-2 in an entertaining draw by Burnley that held them back in extending their top-four lead. One eye for Maurizio Sarri will be on the upcoming Europa League fixture, but a win here will more or less confirm their top-four which means the Blues will get their best squad. One worry for Chelsea, though, is the fact that they have lost five of their last seven away games in the Premier League (W2, L5).

Key Statistics

  • Manchester United are unbeaten in nine of their last ten home games against Chelsea in all competitions.
  • Manchester United have failed to score in three successive competitive matches for the first time since 2015.
  • Chelsea have failed to score in five of their last seven Premier League away games.

The bet of our experts

Manchester United are in doldrums and have a lot of catching to do. The first-half performance against City should give them hope, though. If the Red Devils can replicate that form, an upset win could be on the cards. However, Chelsea would be looking to avoid a banana peel, although they have the upcoming Europa League semi-final to worry about. It could be a tight encounter that might end up as a draw.
