The match

A very open Group G in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League will open when Olympique Lyon welcome FC Zenit to France. The hosts are fresh from their exploits last season that saw them reach the round of 16 before losing to FC Barcelona. Lyon have made a good start to their domestic season with consecutive wins, but have since gone three matches without a win (D2, L1). In the Champions League, it has been an interesting sequence of matches for Lyon, who have drawn six of their last seven matches (D6, L1) with their last win coming on the opening night of group phase last year when they stunned Manchester City 2-1. That includes a run of four drawn home matches last season. Three of those in the group phase have all been 2-2. Zenit come into this fixture on the back of a 3-1 domestic win over the weekend that made it three wins in a row, including a friendly. The Russians are making their appearance in the group stage of the Champions League for the first time since 2015/16, when they reached the last-16 stage. Last season saw Zenit reach the last-16 of the Europa League, where they lost out to Villarreal. Zenit have lost their last three Champions League matches, but have won five straight prior to that.

Key Statistics

  • Lyon have drawn all three Champions League home matches last season with an identical score of 2-2.
  • Zenit are without a win in nine European away matches (D2, L7).
  • Zenit won both games against Lyon when these two teams were drawn together in the 2015/16 Champions League group stage.

The bet of our experts

Lyon haven’t started their Ligue 1 season impressively, failing to pick a win for three matches now. Even their Champions League form is dicey, with no wins since their first match against Manchester City in the group phase last season. Even at home, they are without a win since a 3-0 win over Dinamo in September 2016. Zenit haven’t really sparkled on their away matches in the Champions League, never winning more than two or losing more than two in a row since September 2013. Interestingly, they haven’t been involved in a Champions League draw away from home since December 2011 (W9, L10). Back this game to see goals and might not be a surprise if it’s a draw.
