Two sides with genuine ambitions of qualifying in Group J of the Euro 2024 qualifiers will clash this weekend when Luxembourg plays host to Portugal at Stade de Luxembourg on Sunday evening. The hosts have been dubbed the dark horse in this group and got their tournament off to a fair start, holding Slovakia to a 0-0 draw away from home on Friday. Luxembourg gave a good account of themselves in that match against a higher-ranked side, sharing the possession almost evenly throughout the match while managing seven shots at goal in the 90 minutes. The hosts currently sit in third place in Group J, behind Portugal and Bosnia-Herzegovina, who both put on impressive showings in their opening matches. It’s going to be difficult coming up against a top 10 ranked side for Luxembourg, but they will want to put on another good showing here as a strong performance against a top side could give them the motivation they need to push forward for the rest of the qualifiers.
As for Portugal, the world number 9 ranked side, according to Fifa rankings, cantered through their first match of the group, demolishing Liechtenstein 4-0 at home. Joao Cancelo opened the scoring for the Portuguese that day before Bernardo Silva doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half. The living legend Christiano Ronaldo polished off their dazzling display with a brace, both from dead-ball situations, including a world from outside the box. Portugal is the out-and-out favourite to top this group and will be looking to go two for two with another solid win in this one.
