Lorenzo Sonego and Frances Tiafoe meet in the third round of the Miami Masters. Sonego has been fairly consistent this year and has already featured in two quarter-finals in Montpellier and Dubai, both coming in the last month. Sonego looked out of sorts in his last tournament at the Indian Wells Masters, where he lost surprisingly to the 70th-ranked player in the world, Jason Kubler. However, Sonego seems to have bounced back relatively well in this tournament, winning his tournament opener against Dominic Thiem (7-6, 6-2) and then going on to overcome Daniel Evans in the last round (4-6, 6-3, 6-2). With a record of 7-8, Sonego has not hit his best form yet this year and will need to muster up a solid performance on the day to overcome this opponent.
Meanwhile, Frances Tiafoe is no stranger to reaching the advanced stages of tournaments, having reached the quarter-final or beyond in four of the five tournaments he’s participated in this year. The American has already notched up one title win this year, which came in the season opener, where he overcame Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. Tiafoe looked in good nick at the Indian Wells Masters, beating the like of Marcos Giron and Cameron Norrie en route to the semi-final, where he was eventually beaten by the in-form Daniil Medvedev. With a first-round buy, Tiafoe has only played one match in this tournament, which was against Yosuke Watakuni, where he made rather hard work of the match, but eventually came out on top (6-7, 7-6, 6-4). Tiafoe lost to Sonego at the Davis Cup last year and will be out for revenge in this one.
