12th seeded Frances Tiaofe takes on the 18th seed Lorenzo Musetti in the clay court Rome Masters third round. Waiting in the last 16 are either the fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas or the unseeded Italian Lorenzo Sonego. Tiafoe is the current world number 12 and if going deep in Rome could arrive at Roland Garros in the top ten. The American had never made it past the first round of this tournament before this run to the last 32. He has won two ATP Tour clay titles, including the US Men's Clay Court Championships last month. Tiafoe has also twice been the runner-up in Estoril. It hasn't gone quite so well on clay in Europe this year, only reaching the last 32 in Barcelona and Madrid. His one match in this tournament was a toughie too. He had to go to a final set to defeat qualifier Daniel Altmaier after losing the first set.
Lorenzo Musetti will have the Italian crowd cheering him on in this match. Reaching this round in Rome has seen him move up a place to 18th in the live rankings. He has played more than his opponent on clay this year as he took part in the South American tournaments, getting to one quarter final and another followed in Marrakech. In Monte Carlo, he beat Novak Djokovic on his way to the last eight. Musetti went one round further in Barcelona beating Cameron Norrie and Jannik Sinner before losing a three-set semi-final to Stefanos Tsitsipas. He'll hope for better luck than in his last match against Tiafoe. That was in the United Cup team tournament final, retiring when a set down. They've met four times at all levels and it's 2-2 with the two clay court meetings being shared.
