Unseeded Zhu Lin and lucky loser Rebecca Marino will clash on Friday at the Birmingham Classic quarterfinals. The winner of this tie will play either Barbora Krejcikova or Linda Fruhvirtova in the semifinals. Zhu Lin has been outstanding in her debut tournament in Birmingham, winning both her rounds without dropping a set. She defeated third seed, Magda Linette in the last round by the loss of just three games. The win took her tally for the season to 16 wins in 26 matches played. Three of those wins have come on grass where she has played four matches. Friday’s match will be the sixth between Zhu Lin and Marino and the second this season. Zhu Lin has won three of those encounters but they have never battled on grass before. After the win over Linnette, Zhu Lin is up to 35th in the live ranking.
Rebecca Marino was granted a second chance after being eliminated in the qualifying rounds. She has grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has set a personal record by advancing to this round. The Canadian has however looked shaky and has dropped a set in every single one of her two main draw matches. To book this round, she defeated the qualifier Emina Bektas for her 13th win of the year. Marino has had a turbulent season though her performance in Birmingham has taken her to within one win of tying her win/loss record. She has so far compiled a record of 13 wins and 14 losses. The win over Bektas moved her eight places to number 82 in the live ranking. Marino defeated Lin Zhu the last time they met, which was on clay in Madrid in April.
Our prediction for Zhu Lin v Rebecca Marino is for Zhu Lin to win. Both players have gone back and forth with each other wherever they have met. Zhu Lin has the head-to-head advantage though and with how she has performed in Birmingham, we feel confident about her winning.
