Old foes will renew their historic rivalry in the Derby della Capitale as Lazio and Roma battle for supremacy at the Stadio Olimpico. Lazio will be looking to make it three wins in a row in Serie A and improve on their current position of 8th while Roma are aiming to stay within reach of top spot after their 2-2 draw with Inter Milan which left them 3rd.
Back-to-back victories for Lazio has left the Biancocelesti just three points off qualifying for the newly formed Europa Conference League but manager Simone Inzaghi won’t want to stop there. His side will be facing Bayern Munich in the last-16 of the Champions League in February after a successful group campaign and their target will be ensuring qualification for Europe’s top tournament once again. Lazio are unbeaten in three matches in Serie A but have only managed to keep a clean sheet in two of their last 12 matches which has resulted in just five victories during that period. The hosts have also won each of their last two games at the Stadio Olimpico including an impressive 2-0 win over Napoli here before Christmas.
Roma will play as the away team in this fixture but they are unbeaten in 16 matches whilst playing at the Olimpico. The Giallorossi have lost just twice at this iconic stadium in close to a year and have won three of their last four league games at this venue. Roma find themselves up in 3rd but after a 2-2 draw with Inter Milan they are now six points off AC Milan who are top. Nonetheless, Paulo Fonseca’s side are primed to better their 5th-place finish from last season but with just nine points separating the top six they can’t afford to let up meaning a derby day win is paramount for both teams.
