Two giants of European football meet on Thursday night when Lazio host Marseille in a UEFA Europa League Group E outing. The hosts are second with three points from two games, while their guests are one point behind in third. The two clubs have met each other on six previous occasions, with Lazio winning four times and only losing once. That positive record includes a 5-1 win in Rome, where they have beaten Marseille twice, in 2000. And Lazio have been doling out defeats to big-name opponents on home soil in recent weeks. They beat Inter Milan 3-1 at the weekend, their fourth victory in five home games in all competitions. It is a run that includes their last home match in the Europa League (a 2-0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow) and the recent derby against AS Roma (which Lazio won 3-2. Four of the last five matches in Lazio have featured at least four goals. Star striker Ciro Immobile is yet to open his account in Europe but has five goals in four Serie A home games this season.
Marseille also enjoyed a big victory at the weekend, getting the better of Lorient in a 4-1 home win. It was their first victory in five matches in all competitions. They have only lost one of their five away games this season but failed to win the last three or score in the most recent two. Marseille's previous four away matches featured fewer than three goals. The French side are nine games without an away victory in Europe, losing seven times. We suggest backing Lazio.
